Internet of Things (IoT)

The Internet of Things (IoT) is influencing our lifestyle, from the way we react to the way we behave. It is a concept that describes the idea of physical devices being connected to the Internet. This giant network of connected devices includes everything such as smartphones, wearable devices, vehicles, home appliances and almost everything that you come across daily. These devices gather and share data about how they are used and the environment in which they operate. These processes function with the help of sensors. Sensors are embedded in every physical device which continuously emit data about the working state of the devices. How do these devices share the huge amount of data and how do we utilize these data purposefully?

IoT provides a common platform for all the devices to share data as well as to communicate with each other. Data is emitted from various sensors and sent to the platform, commonly known as the cloud. At the cloud, information from various sources are integrated. Also, analytics are performed on these data to extract valuable information as and when required.

IOT coffee maker

With the advent of the IoT, basic coffee makers are now moving towards smart coffee machine with sensors that come with it. A smart coffee machine can be controlled with merely a touch on our smartphones. From an app, you can schedule a time for your coffee to be brewed and also customize your coffee according to preference. Once your coffee is ready to be consumed, a notification will be sent to you. The sensors in the machine are also able to emit signals regarding its condition and performance. This data is analyzed continuously, allowing the customer care to contact you to service the machine when it is due. They can also order a new batch of coffee beans from the retailers automatically so that you’ll never run out of them.

Today, we have smart appliances, smart cars, smart homes, smart factories and smart cities where IoT is redefining our lifestyle and transforming the way we interact with technologies. The future of IoT industry is huge. Around 50 billion devices will be installed by 2020 and this will open up new streams of revenues, business models and technologies, resulting in more job opportunities.
